Review: The Langham, Melbourne.

The Langham Melbourne on the Yarra and right near the footbridge into the city. Melbourne, Vic, Australia
Rating: 5 Star
The Langham Melbourne is located at 1 Southgate Avenue, Southgate, Melbourne Vic 3006.
In General…
Travel and Leisure rated The Langham as the no2 best city hotel in Australia in 2015. It was easy to agree. Exemplary service, luxurious rooms and the best location in Melbourne. Whats not to like? On arrival you are welcomed by a formal hatted doorman and enter a grand lobby area with a fountain leading upwards via a sweeping staircase to ever more opulance, glass, marble and glitz. Yet somehow it remains understated and refined. The reception area was vast but warm. The staff courteous and professional. I should say 5 star!
The Location
The Langham is in a terrific location. It is surrounded by good restaurants, bars and cafes and enjoys a prime position by the Yarra. Easy access to the city is provided via the footbridge across the Yarra and within 5 minutes you are at Flinders Train tation, or 10 minutes to Flinders Lane and the heart of the city. The Crown Casino is a 10 minute walk alonng the Yarra and The MCG and Hisense arena a 20 minute stroll away. Tullamarine is a 25 minute taxi ride.
The Room
We had booked the base room – the Grand Classic Room. It was more than adequate and certainly 5 star. Located on the 22nd floor it offered views to the MCG and out to the ocean.
Size
Large room about 30m2 with a large marble bathroom with shower and bath. Bed The Langham Blissful bed was indeed delightful. A king size with luxurious manchester and big fluffy Pillows.
Furnishings
Classical and elegant creams, browns, blues and crisp white bedding.
Bathroom
The bathroom was large with lots of marble and glass. The shower had a massage shower head so not quiet the rainwater shower I prefer. The bath filled quickly and was of a nice size for one. There was every amenity by CHUAN Spa you could possibly think of available. Combs, nail files, tooth brushes as well as all the regular amenities. Off course there was also thick terry toweling robes, slippers and lovely thick towels.
Breakfast
The breakfast was included in our rate and a buffet was on offer. Service was good. We were offered a window table and cappuccinos were not a problem. Everything was fresh. The eggs cooked to order and omelette’s were also available. The usual hot food offerings were available but as good as they could be done for a buffet and constantly refreshed. There was a nice Asian section. The breads and the little cakes and pastries were delicious.
Fitness Facilities & Spa
The gym and pool area was accessed via the Spa. Once again service was excellent. We were provided towels and shown through. The gym was of a good size with what looked like loads of good equipment. Having spent most of the day wandering the city the rooftop pool and spa was a delight. It was light and bright and although enclosed (thankfully! It was a very cold Melbourne winter day,) it looked out to a large patio for sunbathing in summer. The Spa has a fabulous reputation and I was sorry not to have found time in my busy schedule to review for you!
Other helpful Information you might need…
Top Tip!: Book early for special events to get the best room rates.
Restaurant: We didn’t get to try the Langham’s Restaurant Melba. I’am told Melba offers the best buffet you are ever likely to have. ( let me know!)
The Bar: Although we did see coffees being had by the AS Roma entourage as we flitted through, we did not try the delicious sounding High Tea.
Parking: Leave the car behind and save your cash for some of the fabulous restaurants and bars nearby.
